The challenge

A nation facing overlapping crises

Years of conflict, political instability, economic decline and devastating earthquakes have left millions of Afghans struggling to rebuild their lives.

In provinces such as Kunar and Nangarhar, where we work, access to education, employment and essential services remains limited, making long-term recovery increasingly difficult.

Despite these challenges, communities across Afghanistan are determined to rebuild. That's where Rethink Charity comes in.

OUR APPROACH

Rethinking What Charity Can Be: Afghanistan is more than an emergency response. Alongside providing urgent relief, we invest in education, livelihoods, infrastructure and community development that help families rebuild their lives with dignity.

Our trusted local teams in Kunar and Nangarhar deliver practical solutions that meet today's needs while creating opportunities for tomorrow.

The afghanistan rethink complex

The Rethink Village is a proved concept in Syria and we are now building it for the people of Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan Rethink Complex is our flagship vision for the future: a self-sustaining community inspired by the Madinah model.

Designed around the principles that guide everything we do, it will bring together homes, education, worship, livelihoods and emergency preparedness in one integrated development.

Shafiullah Faruq Family

Shafiullah Faruq passed away during the war in Afghanistan, leaving behind a widow and three orphaned children, the eldest, Zahidullah, just 10. The family has faced severe financial hardship since his passing.

Rethink Charity provided $2,300 in Zakat support, which was vital for essential living expenses - primarily food - and paying down the debts left by their late father. While this cleared significant burdens, some debt remains, and the family continues to struggle.

The family's most urgent remaining need is access to clean water. They currently lack a reliable source, making the construction of a water well critical. Continued support is essential to help them achieve stability and address these remaining basic needs.

Gul Ahmad Ismat Family

Following the loss of Gul Ahmad Ismat, his widow and six orphaned children faced severe financial hardship. The eldest is a 15-year-old madrassah student, while the five younger children remain entirely dependent on their mother.

Rethink Charity provided $2,300 in Zakat support, which has been fully spent on food, partial house construction, and clearing debts left by their late father.

With new debts accrued and their home still unfinished, further financial support is urgently needed to complete the house and provide safe, stable shelter for this vulnerable family.

Muhammad Ibrahim Shakir Family

Muhammad Ibrahim Shakir passed away, leaving behind his widowed wife and three orphaned children. The eldest child, Mustafa, is 13 years old and currently attends a madrassah. The children remain dependent on their mother, who has faced the responsibility of supporting the household following the loss of her husband.

Rethink Charity provided the family with $2,300 in Zakat support to assist them throughout the year. The full amount has now been spent on essential household needs, including food and other necessary items. Part of the support was also used to clear debts that had been left behind by their deceased father, helping to reduce the family's financial burden.

Although the assistance has provided valuable relief, some of the deceased father's debts still remain outstanding. Continued support would help the family meet their ongoing daily needs while also enabling them to clear the remaining debts and achieve greater financial stability.

Noorul Haq Family

Noorul Haq passed away, leaving behind his widowed wife and six orphaned children. The eldest child, Ahmadullah, is 12 years old and currently attends a madrassah. The remaining children are younger and depend on their mother for their daily care and support. The loss of their father has left the family facing significant financial difficulties.

Rethink charity provided the family with $2,300 in Zakat support to assist them throughout the year. The full amount has now been spent on essential household needs, particularly food and flour, as well as on clearing debts that had been left behind by their deceased father. This assistance has helped the family meet their basic needs while also reducing the financial burden caused by the outstanding debts.

Despite this support, some of the deceased father's debts remain unpaid, and the family continues to face financial challenges. With six children dependent on their widowed mother, continued assistance would help the family meet their essential living costs and work towards clearing the remaining debts.

Bakht Muhammad (Zara Bibi) Family

Bakht Muhammad’s passing left his widow, Zara Bibi, solely responsible for their five orphaned children. Their eldest, 13-year-old Habibullah, attends a madrassah, while the younger four remain entirely dependent on their mother.

Rethink Charity provided $2,300 in Zakat support, which has been fully utilised over the past year. These funds were vital for house construction, settling debts left by their late father, and purchasing food and essential household items.

This support has now been exhausted, yet the family continues to face urgent financial hardship and struggles to cover daily living costs. Further assistance is critical to help this vulnerable family maintain stability and secure their basic needs.

Abdul Hadi Azizi Family

Abdul Hadi Azizi passed away, leaving his widow and three orphaned children. The family faced financial hardship following his death, relying on limited resources to meet basic needs and manage debts left by their father.

Rethink Charity provided $2,300 in Zakat support to assist them throughout the year. The family used funds to purchase food and cover essential household expenses, while clearing some debts left by their father. Some debt remains outstanding. Importantly, they used a portion of funds to purchase a room within their uncle's house, giving the widow and her children a permanent place to live, providing greater stability and security.

Although support helped the family establish more secure accommodation and meet daily needs, they require assistance. Current needs include food, winter support and essential household expenses. Further support would help the family maintain basic living conditions and provide security for the children.

Bakht Muhammad Ahmadi Family

Bakht Muhammad Ahmadi passed away, leaving behind his widowed wife and five orphaned children. The eldest child, Abidullah, is 11 years old and attends a madrassah. The family lives in their own home, but they continue to face significant financial difficulties meeting their daily needs.

Rethink Charity provided the family with $2,300 in Zakat support to assist them throughout the year. The full amount has now been spent. A significant portion of the support was used to purchase flour for bread and other essential food needs, while some funds were used to clear debts left by their deceased father. This helped reduce the family's financial burden, although some debts remain outstanding.

The family's Zakat support has provided important assistance with their immediate food needs and outstanding financial obligations. However, with five children dependent on their widowed mother, the family continues to require support to meet ongoing food and household expenses and help clear remaining debts.
